Japanese hotel "Sumiyoshiya Ryokan" in Kanazawa

Sumiyoshiya Ryokan is located Kanazawa City of Japan. Close to the Kenroku-en Garden, Omi-cho fish Market. We will write the sightseeing guide and the event, etc.

Our Ryokan has the longest history of 300 years among all the Ryokans in such Kanazawa.
We are simple and small Inn though, all through the ages we find customer’s smile encouraging and will continue to our Ryokan business in future as well.
Please relax at Sumiyoshiya Ryokan and have a pleasant day!

Have a good year !

We cleaned our ryokan and decorate a entrance for New Year's season.
For example…Shimekazari, Kagami-mochi etc…

Kagami-mochi are offerings to the god of the New Year. It is believed people who eat them will lead healthy and happy lives in the coming year.

People decorate the entrances of their homes with shimekazari during the New Year's season to ward off evil spirits.
They are made of shimenawa, sacred Shinto rope of rice straw, used to indicate the sacred areas where gods descend.
Shimekazari is a special shimenawa decorated with various auspicious objects such as bitter oranges, ferns and lobsters.
When the New Year's period is over, shimekazari and other New Year's decorations are taken to shrines and burned.

Dormer Window

dormer window

There is a dormer window in our Ryokan.
It is an open ceiling space so that you can see the window from down stairs.
The house roof is being sustained by the thick pine tree beams.
The beams are used vented tree intentionally , because it is better to hold the heavy snow on the roof in winter time.
Please take a look at it when you come to our Ryokan!

Gold leaf

At our dinner time, we serve “Sashimi” dish with little “gold leaf” on the top of it.
Our guest’s reactions are not the same such as "Is this real gold?", "It is very beautiful!" and "Is it safe to eat?", etc.
You can buy such gold leaves at almost all of Gold leaf shops in Kanazawa city.
We recommend you get one and bring it back to your home country as a souvenir from Kanazawa. It is very light and will stay long.
You can enjoy it in various occasions such as you float them on your drinks, also you can sprinkle them on the top of chocolate cakes, etc.
